Revolut Learning Feature

Type

AllWomen Bootcamp.

Role

Product Designer.

Year

2024.

Overview

In this project, I focused on enhancing the learning experience within Revolut’s investment feature. Many users, especially Millennials and Gen Zs, are eager to learn about investing but struggle with confidence due to a lack of engaging and accessible educational content. My aim was to redesign the current "Learn" feature to break down complex topics, boost user motivation, and ultimately make investing more approachable.

What I did

As the product designer, I conducted user research, surveys, and usability tests to gather insights. I identified key pain points, including a lack of engagement and clarity in the learning flow. Using this data, I redesigned the UI and learning structure to incorporate gamified elements, personalized learning paths, progress tracking, and interactive quizzes. My role spanned the full design process, from user research to final UI prototypes.

Key Achievements & Learnings:

Through thorough research and testing, I was able to identify critical gaps in user engagement with the investment learning tool. The new design significantly improved clarity, personalized learning, and user motivation. Key achievements included the simplification of the onboarding process, introduction of a more flexible learning path, and the successful integration of gamification to make learning more interactive and rewarding.

If you're curious about the process behind this project and the reasoning behind each decision, it involved an in-depth user research approach using the Double Diamond methodology. I had the opportunity to test with real users, iterate on the design, and refine the experience. Continue here to explore the full journey.

Problem statement

Users struggle to learn investing.

Revolut’s investment education feature lacks engagement, making it difficult for users to confidently learn how to invest.

Data

70% of Millennials and Gen Zs are eager to learn about investing, only a small percentage feel confident doing so.

Hypothesis

Providing accessible and engaging educational resources on investing within the Revolut app will increase user engagement with the investing feature, as users will feel more confident and knowledgeable about utilizing it.

Research Qualitative / Quantitative

Benchmark / Competitive Landscape

The competitive landscape of investment platforms reveals a gap in the current Revolut app's learning feature, which lacks depth in educational tools compared to its competitors. Trade Republic, for instance, provides a streamlined, beginner-friendly interface with more guidance and basic tutorials for new investors. Competitors like eToro and Robinhood focus heavily on community interaction and educational resources, offering tutorials, market insights, and even social trading features that allow users to learn from one another. Revolut’s current investment section is primarily transactional, offering minimal learning resources. It lacks the interactivity, community engagement, and structured educational content that competitors provide, leaving beginners without clear guidance or motivation to build their investment skills.

Interviews

Main conclussions

The survey and interviews revealed a clear need for better educational tools and guidance within the investment section of the Revolut app. Users expressed confusion about where to start and how to build investing knowledge, with many seeking more structured, personalized learning paths. The data also highlighted that users are motivated by rewards and progress tracking, showing that gamified learning elements, like RevPoints, could enhance engagement and make the experience more enjoyable while fostering confidence in investing.

Ideation

Crazy 8’s / Brainstorming

Idea selected through
prioritization matrix

The gamified learning path (#1) was selected during prioritization because it offers high user value and feasibility. It directly addresses the need for engaging, interactive learning, helping beginners stay motivated while simplifying complex investment topics. The idea also integrates progress tracking and rewards, adding structure and motivation to the learning process, making it more likely that users will stay engaged and continue learning.

Solution

Key features to include

Main improvements from the actual feature

Redesign of question screens:

The UI for the question screens was improved by centering content, adding elements for new features, and clearly distinguishing between correct and incorrect answers. Instant feedback motivates users to check their answers immediately. A timer adds urgency to complete tasks, and earning points as an instant reward keeps users engaged.

Main home ‘Learn’ feature redesign:

The dashboard was expanded, and more topics were added for every skill level. A categorized menu allows users to browse lessons by level, with easy access to the glossary, learning plan, progress tracker, and a variety of lessons tailored to each level.

Glossary redesign:

Following user testing, several UI improvements were made, including a dropdown menu for better organization, optimized space usage, and adjusted margins to ensure smooth adaptation across different mobile devices.

New option to review answers:

Users expressed a strong preference for understanding why an answer was correct or incorrect. After completing each lesson, they will now have the option to review detailed explanations for all answers.

New content structure:

Short flashcards present key concepts concisely, preventing users from feeling overwhelmed by excessive text. This format allows for easier reading, with users able to swipe through essential points effortlessly.

Learnings

User motivation is key: One of the primary takeaways from this project was the importance of motivation in educational tools. Users are more likely to complete their learning journey if they see tangible progress and receive feedback. The introduction of gamified rewards like badges, progress tracking, and quizzes with instant feedback helped sustain their motivation.

Simplifying complex information: Many users found investing intimidating due to the overwhelming amount of text and complex terminology. Breaking lessons into smaller, manageable chunks, coupled with interactive elements like quizzes and flashcards, made it easier for users to digest content without feeling overwhelmed.

Personalization drives engagement: Offering a personalized learning experience based on individual goals and starting levels played a crucial role in boosting user engagement. Allowing users to select their level of expertise and offering tailored learning paths encouraged them to stay engaged and commit to the learning process.

Next Steps

Introduce New Learning Formats: To prevent the learning experience from becoming monotonous, I plan to introduce different lesson structures, such as interactive videos, infographics, and live sessions. This will cater to diverse learning preferences and keep the content fresh.

Launch Live Q&A and Webinars: Offering live Q&A sessions and webinars with investment experts will provide users with real-time insights and the opportunity to ask questions. This feature can enhance the learning experience by fostering a sense of community and providing additional support to learners.

Simulated Investment Environment: Creating a virtual investment simulator will allow users to practice their skills in a risk-free environment. This "game" will let users make investment decisions with virtual currency, helping them gain practical experience and confidence before applying their knowledge to real-world investments.

By iterating on the design and expanding the learning options, we aim to make Revolut’s investment learning tool not just informative but highly interactive and motivating for all types of users.
